Why more stitches make a smaller piece
If you produce more stitches in the same span than the pattern specifies, each stitch is narrower. Working the original count will therefore make a narrower item. Fewer stitches per span means wider stitches and a larger result.
The projection isolates stitch gauge. It does not model ease, shaping, row gauge, fabric growth or a different construction, so use it to understand a mismatch rather than to rewrite a fitted garment automatically.
Choose the next swatch deliberately
Change one main variable at a time. A larger tool often reduces stitches per span; a smaller tool often increases them. Inspect drape and density as well as the number, because a numerical match can still produce unsuitable fabric.
