Methodology & Sources

How StitchMeasure derives calculations, presents reference data and records caveats.

StitchMeasure is an independent Maple Web Group property. Calculators use transparent arithmetic; reference mappings are limited original compilations checked against documented authorities and presented with variability warnings.

Calculation rules

  • Length conversion uses the defined factor 1 yard = 0.9144 metres.
  • Gauge results preserve the unrounded calculation and then show a practical whole-stitch or whole-row result.
  • Repeat fitting separates repeated stitches from any setup or edge stitches supplied by the user.
  • Invalid, zero and negative measurement inputs do not produce a usable result.

Reference governance

Millimetres are treated as the canonical physical diameter. US and legacy UK labels are presented as commonly encountered mappings with a manufacturer-variation warning. Yarn terminology is explained in original prose; Craft Yarn Council symbols and third-party table designs are not reproduced.

Primary consulted sources: Craft Yarn Council Hooks & Needles, Standard Yarn Weight System and Standards FAQ. Source links appear on relevant pages. Measurement formulae are independently implemented arithmetic.

Review cycle: conversion mappings and yarn terminology annually; editorial blanket starting points at least every two years; calculation regression tests whenever code changes. Last substantive review: 25 August 2026.

How to use this page

  1. Use exact defined length factors for metre/yard conversion.
  2. Use millimetres as the canonical physical tool measurement.
  3. Show formulas and unrounded values before practical rounding.
  4. Record source URL, access date and review requirement for factual dependencies.

What to check before you rely on the result

  • StitchMeasure is not affiliated with a manufacturer or standards body.
  • External graphics, symbols and table expression are not copied.

Source note

This original presentation was checked against the relevant Craft Yarn Council reference. Regional labels may vary; no third-party graphic or table layout is reproduced.
