Select dimensions that suit the intended use, then calculate the body from a blocked swatch. Size names are convenient descriptions rather than guaranteed standards.

Plan for construction and growth
A blanket may be worked straight, diagonally or in joined modules. The proportional width calculation applies directly to rectangular fabric; diagonal and modular designs need their pattern’s own geometry.
Large knitted fabric can grow under its weight. A treated swatch cannot reproduce every full-scale effect, but it provides a better basis than an untreated label gauge.
Create a workable cast-on
Calculate the raw count, fit the stitch repeat and check whether selvedges are included. Plan picked-up borders separately, and test whether stripes or motifs complete cleanly within the row count.
How to use this page
- Choose a use and target dimensions.
- Measure a blocked swatch in the blanket stitch pattern.
- Calculate stitches and rows, then reconcile them with repeats and borders.
What to check before you rely on the result
- Large knitted fabric may grow under its own weight.
- Modular or diagonal constructions need pattern-specific calculations.
