A category is not a diameter
Yarn-weight terms group materials often used at broadly similar fabric gauges. They do not define one exact thickness, and regional names overlap. DK, light worsted, aran and worsted may be used differently by brands and markets.
For substitution, compare the specific products. Length for the same mass is a useful clue, while fibre, construction and finishing affect behaviour.
A practical substitution check
Begin with the required gauge and fabric purpose. Compare label length and mass, fibre, care and construction, then make a swatch. A numerical gauge match that produces unsuitable drape or density is not a successful substitution.
Plain-language yarn weight categories
These category names are broad comparison aids, not measured diameters. The order runs from finer to thicker yarn; brands and regions may use additional names.
