Crochet gauge is stitch-pattern specific
A yarn label can suggest a starting hook, but a dense single-crochet panel and an open taller stitch will not share the same fabric gauge simply because the yarn and hook match. Measure the actual project stitch pattern.
The width calculation concerns fabric stitches. Turning or lifting chains remain separate because a pattern may treat them as a stitch, a height adjustment or neither.
From raw count to foundation
Calculate the body stitches first, then fit the result to the stitch multiple and add setup or turning chains exactly as the pattern directs. This keeps the arithmetic visible and prevents a chain from being counted twice.
