Foundation count is not only width divided by gauge
The tool estimates body stitches and then moves to a valid repeat count. Setup stitches are explicit and turning chains are excluded because patterns define them differently.
A foundation chain can be tighter than the rows above it. Test a short repeat in the chosen foundation method and confirm the edge is not pulling the planned width inward.
Before committing to a long chain
Calculate the body, fit the stated repeat, add turning chains only as directed and work enough of the first row to verify the edge. If you change the foundation method, confirm that the pattern construction still works.
