Choose dimensions for the real use
Chair, pram, sofa and bed blankets have different constraints. Category names vary, so measure the intended space and decide whether the blanket should sit within it, cover the top or drape over an edge.
Dense crochet can make a large blanket heavy while open fabric can stretch. Swatch in the actual pattern, treat it, and judge the fabric as well as its dimensions.
Body and border are separate
Plan the central fabric first. Estimate the border contribution on every side and reduce the body where necessary. Fit the body count to the stitch repeat before adding turning chains or border setup.
